118th Boston Marathon

Having run eight marathons, the Boston Marathon was always a race to strive for. While the New York City, Marine Corps and others were larger, anyone who paid their entry fee was permitted to run. Boston, however, had very strict qualifying guidelines. Depending on one's age, you had to run a certified marathon course in the previous year in a certain time. Needless to say, I never qualified for Boston.

Until last year, the marathon was part of a unique New England tradition. Patriot's Day, morning baseball at Fenway and the runners through downtown Boston. This year the race will have the largest field ever and that is a great thing to see. As to be expected, there will be additional layers of security everywhere with a police presence from start to finish.

Before the game last night, the Red Sox held an emotional and moving ceremony honoring those who lost their lives, the many who were physically injured as well as those who responded to the emergency. Click here for the video.

May we never forget what happened last year, but I look forward to the day when the Boston Marathon returns to what it once was.

Last week's surreal events in Boston hit home on so many levels. Not only did it occur in our 'backyard', but the Boston Marathon is America's premier road race. Every year there are local runners we know and track their 26.2 mile journey online as well as people who are going down to volunteer or to cheer their family and friends on.

In my time, I have run eight marathons and have run in or worked at many large events. It is always such a happy and joyous moment when the runners, after training so hard and for so long, approach the finish line and begin looking for their family members. The sense of accomplishment is real! I still can't process how someone can be so evil and destroy so many lives.

How impressive was the response of the police, fire and emergency personnel just after the explosions? In discussing this with Lovell Fire Department Chief Tommie McKenzie, he said that everyone did exactly how they were trained. So, remember the next time you see one of the disaster training exercises that various towns and cities conduct, that they really do serve an important purpose.

One other observation--many people object to the outrageous salaries that professional athletes earn and the self-centered lives they lead. However, there is no question that the Boston sport teams played a tremendous role in bringing the region back together. Take a moment to watch the singing of the National Anthem at the Bruins' game and Neil Diamond (who came uninvited on a red-eye flight from California) sing Sweet Caroline at Saturday's Red Sox game.

The Governor of Massachusetts and the Mayor of Boston have established The One Fund, Inc., a non-profit organization to collect funds that will be used to help the victims of the bombings. Long after normalcy returns to our daily lives, the injured victims and families who lost a loved one will still need help. If you can, please donate.

2012 Boston Red Sox Schedule

Is there anything better than driving around and seeing, with each passing day, the growing amount of earth under the disappearing patches of snow? Spring training is in full gear, daily team updates are in the papers and you can once again listen to the games on the radio or over the internet.

This year the Red Sox open their season April 5th in Detroit and start their home season against Tampa Bay on the 13th of April. This is the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park and there are plenty of commemorative events planned (and I'm sure plenty of souvenirs to buy!). FYI--this is also the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking, the Girl Scouts, the Cherry Blossom trees in Washington, DC, of Naval Aviation, LL Bean and my personal favorite, the Oreo Cookie.

If you would like your own Boston Red Sox schedule, send me an e-mail: stan@fairpoint.net.

P.S. The Baltimore Orioles last had a winning season in 1998. It has been a long drought and this year the team, with a nod to the past, brings the cartoon bird back to the uniforms. Management has been making moves in the right direction (farm system, international development, etc.) and success in 2012 will be measured by a .500 team. One more thing--if your favorite baseball team is not the Red Sox and you would like to listen to your team, MLB's GameDay Audio is the best buy. For $19.99, you can listen to every game, any team, for the entire season.

      Bruin Fever

Had the opportunity to spend the day in Boston yesterday and did a good bit of walking around. The sun was out, there was a pleasant breeze and it seemed like everyone, including General George Washington, was wearing some sort of Bruins' wear. The best display was outside this auto body on Route 1A on the way out of town. Based on the way the Bruins played last night, it seems as if all the good vibes flew out to Vancouver with the team.

We had lunch at Chau Chow City on Essex Street in Chinatown and I recommend this Dim Sum restaurant. Wonderful food, attentive service and great prices.
