Here we are, in the middle of December, and I am sure that you still have lots of presents to buy. And then you start planning a quick trip to North Conway or to South Portland. Sometimes we overlook all of the wonderful merchants, artists and non-profits that we have living in and around Lovell.  Here are some [...]

How Do You Move A Barn?

alt tag

Western Maine is blessed to have so many skilled craft people living and working here and that they earn enough to make a living. Some of these crafts are not your everyday type of jobs. As many know, whenever I see a 'Fox & Sons' sign on the road, I like to pull over and be a 'sidewalk supervisor'. To see just a handful of people work at [...]

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, I MEAN LOVELL

Lovell's Minuteman sits in a prominent spot in the middle of the Village park, right next to the flagpole. Eric Gulbrandsen and Lynn Hurd do a wonderful job every year maintaining the flower bed right in front of him. For the most part, he sees people coming and going into the library, kids running and laughing on the playground and hears [...]

David W. Mason, 1917-2017

Dave Mason passed away this past week. Always had many enthusiastic and encouraging words for young and old and took the time to thank people for their contributions. I still have a voice mail on my office phone from Dave thanking me for the "Great" Old Home Days parade and related festivities. He also mentioned that I should make sure to acknowledge everyone who contributed. You can see Dave in the picture above. For many years, he was the official starter for the Lovell OHD 5k and he always received a strong round of applause. On his hat was the word "STARTER" in black magic marker.  Dave Mason was a special person.

Please take a moment to read about his life here.

Super Saturday is Coming!!!

August in Lovell always starts with a bang. The Dave Mason Tennis Tournament is the first weekend of the month. Next comes the annual Tour de Lovell, a popular bike tour through the town including the many hills up in the north end. But for more than 40 years, the third weekend of August means the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library's Arts and Artisans [...]

Celebrate Demme -- 'Stop Making Sense'

alt tag

Jonathan Demme, noted producer, director and screenwriter, passed away on April 26th. To celebrate the life of Mr. Demme, art house theaters across the country will screen his ground-breaking 1984 documentary, 'Stop Making Sense'.

The town of Lovell, where Jonathan spent many years at the family's summer residence, will participate in the celebration by screening his film outdoors at the historic Hewn Oaks. Show time is 8:30. Seating is casual so bring your own blankets and chairs as well as any refreshments (and maybe some bug spray).

Special thanks to the Fryeburg Academy Film Workshop, Hewnoaks Art Colony and Palm Pictures Entertainment. For more information visit celebratedemme.com

2017 Memorial Day Ceremony

IMG_3211

The rain contributed to a small turnout at today's Memorial Day Ceremony at the Lovell Village Monument. Thank you very much to the Lovell/Fryeburg VFW Post No. 6783 for conducting the service. Please do not forget that Memorial Day is observed so that we can remember all the men and women who died in active military service. Next time you [...]

2017 Kezar Lake Ice-Out

alt tag

When ice-out actually occurs is always debated but the State of Maine uses the following definition: "...we will consider “ice-out” to be when you can navigate unimpeded from one end of the water body to the other. There may still be ice in coves or along the shoreline in some areas but when a person can traverse the entire water body without being stopped by ice floes, we will consider the ice to be out.

John Bacchiocchi, Lovell's resident ice-out expert, has declared Wednesday, April 26th, to be 2017's Ice-Out date!

Click here to see Ice-Out dates for various lakes around the state. Kezar Lake should appear on it soon.
