2013 Gasping Gobbler Results

Early this morning it was COLD and the strong winds blowing from every direction made it much colder! But the sun stayed out and helped to make the day perfect for runners and walkers. A total of 61 participants crossed the finish line. The overall winner was Stephanie Wetzel with a winning time of 20:01 and Christian Bedell was the top male finisher with a time of 20:31. The top walker was Judith Yeary with a time of 38:26. The 'Middle of the Pack' award went to Debra Taylor. These four winners all received a frozen turkey!

One of the real nice features of the Gasping Gobbler is the delicious lunch for all of the runners/walkers and spectators at the VFW Hall. A great group of volunteers work hard every year to cook-up some good chili, chowder, soup and treats. Not only is the Gasping Gobbler a healthy way to spend the Saturday before Thanksgiving, but it is a fundraiser for the Lovell Recreation Department. Thanks to everyone who participated!

You know Thanksgiving is close when it is time for the Gasping Gobbler! Join the fun this Saturday at 10 am. The course, just three times (5k) around the Lovell Athletic Field, is flat and fast.

There are numerous awards for both runners and walkers (NO RUNNING PERMITTED), various age group categories plus the following participants win a turkey: First Place Male and Female Runners, First Place Walker and "Middle of the Pack". New this year is a homemade Apple Pie for the first "teen" team!

Sign-ups are at the Lovell Athletic Field ($15 with special Family Rates available). Each participant gets a great looking key chain! Awards and a delicious luncheon are at the VFW Hall immediately after the last runner/walker crosses the finish line.

Call or e-mail me if you have any questions. See you at the starting line!

A great thank you to everyone who came to the Sixth Annual Chili Competition yesterday. There were 13 chili entrants and each chili was very different. From beef to vegetarian, from mild to smoking hot, the Challenge brought out the best in all of the cooks. The crowd was large and took their voting responsibilities seriously. Once again, The New Suncook School Art Class designed the aprons for the top vote recipients. Here are the winners with the table numbers in parenthesis: JUDGES' CHOICE First Place -- Caracciola Family (#7) Second Place -- Mary Heroux (#8) Third Place Tie -- The Wicked Good Store (#1) and Sherri Pratt/Peter Paulette (#10)

PEOPLES' CHOICE First Place -- Adam & Paul Armington (#2) Second Place -- The Wicked Good Store (#1) Third Place -- Chris and Stacey Mills (#3)

JUNIOR DIVISION WINNERS -- Molly Ockett 7th Grade Class

With more than $1,200 raised yesterday, it was a record day for the Chili Challenge! Every penny collected goes directly to the Lovell Friends Helping Friends Emergency Fuel Fund. Special thanks to Fire Chief Tommie McKenzie for the use of the Center Lovell Fire House which is the perfect venue; all of the cooks who took the time to perfect their recipe and to enter the competition; the Lovell bakers who generously donated goodies to the very successful bake sale, the Old Saco Inn and Rosie's Lovell Village Store for donating auction prizes and to the many people who came for some good chow and a fun afternoon.

If you were unable to attend yesterday's Chili Challenge but would like to donate, please send a check to: FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS Town Of Lovell PO Box 236 Center Lovell, ME 0416

Honoring Lovell's Veterans

November 11th is when our nation honors the veterans of all wars. Originally, the holiday was to mark the end of the First World War but was changed in 1954 to include veterans of all wars. Pat Foley and Lynn Hurd have organized a very special exhibit at the Lovell Historical Society's Kimball Stanford House. Nicely arranged are photographs, documents and uniforms that will help celebrate the lives of all Lovell's veterans who have served and continue to serve our country.

Everyone is invited to visit this Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. Refreshments will be served and it is invited that many veterans, as well as their family and friends, will attend. Please feel free to bring any special items to share.

Here's a great idea for Sunday Afternoon--Come at noon to the Center Lovell Fire House for the Chili Challenge (all proceeds go directly to the Lovell Friends Helping Friends Fuel Fund) and then make your way to this wonderful exhibit at the Historical Society!

Please don't forget to attend the Veterans Day service in Lovell Village. After stops in East Conway and Fryeburg, members will arrive in Lovell around noon. Immediately following the ceremony, the VFW's Ladies Auxilary invites everyone to the VFW on Smarts Hill Road for lunch.
