Fryeburg Fair

Another item on the list of why this is a great area to live is that you never have to take traffic congestion into consideration when going somewhere. Except, of course, when it is Fryeburg Fair week. Everyone makes use of back roads to avoid the back-ups and the smart folks plan their trips accordingly to avoid getting frustrated! It doesn't matter if you like the Fair or not, it has a major impact on the region.

This year's Fair starts on Sunday September 30th and closes on Sunday October 7th. The gates open at 7 am every morning and all exhibits are open from 9 am to 9 pm. Click here for this year's brochure. There is always something to do!

I'm usually satisfied with a one-day visit. It is fun to see friends with their animals, see who won ribbons for their crafts, maybe bet on a horse race or two and of course, have some messy food! Let's hope for good weather and have a GREAT TIME!

Restoring the Brick Church's Belfry

After a busy and successful 2012 Summer Season, work began on the restoration of the belfry that sits on top of Lovell's Brick Church for the Performing Arts. Several years of fundraising provided a sufficient amount of money for the complicated process to proceed. There was also an element of uncertainty as to exactly what amount of rot would be found once layers of flashing and shingles were removed.

The good news is that the unknown damage to the tower was minimal, that the work has been completed and done within budget. The repairs were done by the firm Limerick Steeplejacks and I enjoyed not only watching them work on the ground and on the roof, but seeing the progress on a daily basis. Both inside and out, the laborers seemed to be very comfortable working high off the ground. (What is a steeplejack?)

Since 1850, the Brick Church has always been an important institution in Lovell but with its location off of Route 5, not everyone is aware of this beautiful structure. It is worthwhile to take a detour up Christian Hill Road to see the finished work. Although interior restoration continues and funds need to be raised for that, when next summer rolls around, please be sure to attend a concert or two. The building is a gem!
