Portland's First Friday

Two 'Trompe L'oeil (since I can't speak French, I say "fooling the eye") exhibits at the Portland Museum of Art. Both were a pleasure to view and fun looking at the deceptive paintings. And the exhibit of John Haberle's paintings were very informative, especially how he wove in references to his critics and current events. Another exhibit on the first floor was Debating Modern Photography: The Triumph of Group f/64 which details the breakaway group of California photographers from the 1930's. Lots of great photos including those of Ansel Adams. And it is always fun to revisit the Museum's great permanent collection, including a couple of Marsden Hartley's pictures. Mr. Hartley was once a Lovell resident for a brief period of time.

We also had a great meal at Anna's favorite Portland restaurant, Bangkok Thai, at 671 Congress Street. It just a short walk to the Museum. Along with a hockey game at the Civic Center, the Arts District was bustling last night with activity.
