Maine Winter Treats

Sad news in yesterday's Portland Press Herald! Too many shrimp; season may end early read the headline. It seems that this year's harvest has been so successful that the 2010-2011 limit of 8.8 million pounds is on a pace to be met by next week. The season was slated to end April 15th. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is the official arbiter of the annual limit which is set based on abundance. This would be the second year in a row that the Commission is calling for an early end to the season.

Maine lobster gets all the publicity and not being a native, I'm a newcomer to the unique flavor of the Maine Shrimp. Sweet and buttery. They are quick and easy to cook in a variety of recipes. Unlike other delicacies, the cost is low, usually between $3.99-$4.99 a pound and are readily available. If you live close to the coast, there are plenty of fisherman selling them from the back of their truck.

So, notice is served that time is running out to enjoy this year's harvest! Here's one recipe that I enjoy: Maine Shrimp Saute.
