Even though it seems more like mid-July than late September, I think that it is impossible to trick the trees when it comes to foliage. As some trees are starting to turn, I'm sure they have an internal clock telling them that it is time to put on their colorful display. Visit the State of Maine's Foliage Guide.
This is my favorite time of year. The days are warm and the nights are cool and there are so many things to do!
The Fryeburg Fair, celebrating its 161st year, opens this Sunday, October 2nd. I always look forward to going at least one day. Great animal exhibits, vendors, agricultural displays and fair food. I also enjoy seeing how many people I know who won a blue ribbon. Our neighbor, Norma King, always snags a few for her sculptures and baking! The Fair runs from the 2nd to the 9th.
Another way to spend a fun afternoon is to visit Sherman Farm's Corn Maize. Just over the Maine border in East Conway, the farm is a great place to bring the kids. It seems that every year there are new attractions, such as the Grain Train and the Jumping Pillow. But old reliables such as the Corn Cannon, Pumpkin Patch, Pedal Tractors, Hayrides and Cider Donuts will be there. This year's design is the goalie of the Boston Bruins lifting the Stanley Cup which they won last season. Although the theme may change from year-to-year, it is always fun to see how long it will take to reach the exit. And for those who are brave, be sure to try the Maize Massacre every Friday and Saturday nights.
