Come every July and August, you can always count on a number of popular road races in Maine. One of the biggest in the State is Bridgton's Four on the Fourth. More than 2,000 runners sign-up every year and with some significant hills along the way, this race is challenging. This year, an early morning shower kept the pavement wet and may also have kept a number of people home. Silas Eastman, a Fryeburg Academy senior and winner of the 2011 Lovell 5k, came in first place with a time of 21:33 while his running buddy, Tim Even, came in second with a time of 21:41. Emily Ward of Richmond VA was the top female runner with a time of 24:25.

Next on the local circuit is Harrison's 5k Race by the Lake. This run typically gets a good turnout with its course through town and along Long Lake. In addition to a t-shirt (for the first 100 pre-registered), each finisher gets a Whoopie Pie! Start time is 7:00 pm. Register here. I'll be working the finish line so say hi as I pull your number off!

July 21st is Lovell's Old Home Days 5k Run. The race starts at 9:45 am and kicks off the annual parade. The finish line is at the Athletic Field and where there are plenty of refreshments and the Old Home Days activities. Go to Lovell5k.com for more information.

The Main Attraction, the Beach to Beacon, takes place on August 4th. This point-to-point race attracts world-class runners and finishes in picturesque Fort Williams with its views of Casco Bay and the historic Portland Head Light. If you haven't signed-up yet for this race, you will have to wait until next year as it fills up on-line within minutes!
