Fryeburg Fair

Another item on the list of why this is a great area to live is that you never have to take traffic congestion into consideration when going somewhere. Except, of course, when it is Fryeburg Fair week. Everyone makes use of back roads to avoid the back-ups and the smart folks plan their trips accordingly to avoid getting frustrated! It doesn't matter if you like the Fair or not, it has a major impact on the region.

This year's Fair starts on Sunday September 30th and closes on Sunday October 7th. The gates open at 7 am every morning and all exhibits are open from 9 am to 9 pm. Click here for this year's brochure. There is always something to do!

I'm usually satisfied with a one-day visit. It is fun to see friends with their animals, see who won ribbons for their crafts, maybe bet on a horse race or two and of course, have some messy food! Let's hope for good weather and have a GREAT TIME!

Lovell's 5th Annual Chili Challenge will be held on Sunday, November 11th. Not only does this popular event provide an opportunity for both professional and amateur chefs to show off their favorite recipes, but it raises funds and awareness for the Lovell Friends Helping Friends Emergency Fund. All proceeds raised go directly to the Fund which helps residents who are in need of assistance with winter heating costs.

Residents, businesses and organizations throughout western Maine and Mt. Washington Valley are invited to participate. There will be two distinct categories: People's Choice and Judges' Favorites. All winners will receive special awards.

It is never too early to donate to the Fund! Personal contributions can be mailed to: Lovell Friends Helping Friends, Town of Lovell, PO Box 236, Center Lovell, ME 04016.

Restoring the Brick Church's Belfry

After a busy and successful 2012 Summer Season, work began on the restoration of the belfry that sits on top of Lovell's Brick Church for the Performing Arts. Several years of fundraising provided a sufficient amount of money for the complicated process to proceed. There was also an element of uncertainty as to exactly what amount of rot would be found once layers of flashing and shingles were removed.

The good news is that the unknown damage to the tower was minimal, that the work has been completed and done within budget. The repairs were done by the firm Limerick Steeplejacks and I enjoyed not only watching them work on the ground and on the roof, but seeing the progress on a daily basis. Both inside and out, the laborers seemed to be very comfortable working high off the ground. (What is a steeplejack?)

Since 1850, the Brick Church has always been an important institution in Lovell but with its location off of Route 5, not everyone is aware of this beautiful structure. It is worthwhile to take a detour up Christian Hill Road to see the finished work. Although interior restoration continues and funds need to be raised for that, when next summer rolls around, please be sure to attend a concert or two. The building is a gem!

2012 Patriots Schedule

As a Baltimore Ravens fan, it is still painful to recall the last-minute of the most recent AFC Championship Game. A perfectly thrown touchdown pass was dropped by Lee Evans and then a missed field goal by Billy Cundiff. Is it just a coincidence that both players are not on this year's Ravens' Roster?

But we all know that life moves on and the 2012 NFL season kicks off next Wednesday night (moved from its traditional Thursday night start so as not to draw viewers away from President Obama and the Democratic Convention. My money would have been on the NFL game having higher ratings!).

Send me an e-mail and I would be happy to drop a magnetic schedule in the mail. And please take note of where the Patriots travel to on September 23rd!

  1. Bill Hedin on

Hi, was wondering if you still have some of these from last year and if you made any from this season? I collect them with my grandchildren, and it would be awesome to add some to our collections! We look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Hedin family, 3 Murray road, Framingham, ma 01701 thank you!

    Kezar Lake Opportunities

Although I would never use the word "robust" (strong and healthy) to describe this year's local housing market, there has been an uptick in activity, especially when measured against the past four-five years. Most of Kezar Realty's transactions this year have been with year-round residents. Based on their long absence from the marketplace, I consider that alone to be a positive sign. Buyers sense that prices are no longer dropping and they have confidence that their jobs won't be disappearing in the near future. Sellers might not be happy that prices are not returning to previous levels but they should be encouraged that people are once again interested--at a certain price!

Here are two Kezar Lake properties that should attract interest from buyers who have always wanted their own little camp on the lake!

8 North Lower Bay Road, Lovell A three-bedroom, one bath seasonal home just steps from the shore on a 1/2 acre lot. A sandy beach, 100 feet of frontage and mountain views to the south and west makes for a great family camp. Plus a great rental history. MLS # 995864. $295,000! Call 207-925-1500 or click here for more detailed information and to see the virtual tour.

66 Whidden Road, Stow Here is a cozy log cabin that provides an open view of Kezar Lake's Lower Bay. The master bedroom is on the second floor with extra sleeping space on the first. A wood stove, cathedral ceilings, skylights, a screened porch and dock! 135 feet of frontage and priced at $374,900! Brand new listing so call for details. Looking forward to seeing you on the Lake!

Prior to the 9 am opening of the 37th Annual Arts and Artisans Fair, many volunteers are busy unloading artists' cars as they pull up to the New Suncook School. And throughout the day, many people are working hard to keep things running smoothly at this popular Fair that benefits the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library and has something for everyone. More than 50 artisans will be present and there will be artist demonstrations as well as a Book Sale, homemade refreshments and a raffle where you have a chance to win one of ten artist-donated prizes. Stop by the New Suncook School on Route 5 in Lovell between 9 - 3.

Later in the afternoon, from 4-7, is the always crowded Chicken BBQ Benefit Dinner held by the Lovell Fire Department. Where else can you get 1/2 chicken, fresh corn, potato salad, cole slaw, roll and dessert for just $8.50? Stop by the Center Lovell Fire House to eat-in or take home! Show your support for the Lovell Volunteer Fire Department!

And to top off the day, it is Rondi's Birthday and our 28th wedding anniversary!
